This Baby Was Born Without Brain And Lives To Speak His First Word!

Emma Murray knew what pregnancy is about, after all, she had went through nine months of pregnancy to give birth to a lovely boy. She remembers the discomforts and the various symptoms of pregnancy that one will experienced when they are pregnant. So, it came as a surprised when Emma was told that she was pregnant and just about to deliver!

The complications didn’t end there…

“I had only put on a little weight, I had no sickness or cravings and my periods hadn’t stopped.. My mum and dad rushed me to Monklands hospital in the middle of the night, thinking I had an appendicitis,” Emma recalled. It was only at the hospital, Emma received the shock of her life that she was pregnant and she was going to deliver to her baby that day. However, just minutes before childbirth, doctors told her that her baby had a very rare disorder call holoprosencephaly. It is a rare congenital brain malformation that it’s also likely to affect facial features.

“Everything had happened so fast – I didn’t even know I was pregnant , I’d given birth and been told my baby was going to die all in the same 24 hours.”

Aaron was born with only a brain stem and not a developed brain. Doctor mentioned that Aaron will only live for a couple of minutes, hours or just a few days and asked Emma to prepare for the worst. Baby Aaron proved to be a fighter instead.

Two years later, Aaron lived on and surprised Emma when he said his first word – “Mummy”! It was a touching moment for Emma, one that she did not expect at all. Emma recalled how heartbroken she was, seeing Aaron hooked up to every machine in the hospital shortly after he was born. Even though she was drowsy from the medication, she could remember that Aaron’s head was huge and out of proportion.

Fast forward to more than two years later. Aaron outlives Doctors’ expectation! He is a miracle baby who survive without a brain. Although Aaron has limited functions, his internal organs were working well and he could see, laugh and hear.

One fine day, he surprised Emma with his first word when they were playing. Aaron was lying on the carpet and clapping and saying “Mummy” to him, over and over again. It was a surprised for Emma when he picked that up. It wasn’t just a sound or other words, in fact Aaron just repeated what Emma said, he called her “Mummy”.

Emma broke down when she heard it. It was such an emotional moment for the family.

“I’d been told my son would only live for a few minutes, but now here he was saying ‘Mummy’ – something I never thought I would ever hear.”

Emma treasures every moment with Aaron. She was encouraged to start a memory box where she could keep the little things that would remind her of Aaron when he is gone. But she chose to focus on the present instead of what might happen in the future.
