Important Baby Milestones Every Parent Should Know – Part 1

Baby Milestone 1 - 3 months

Baby milestones from 1 – 3 months old

A baby is always developing day by day! A useful resource to enable parents to keep tabs on their child’s developmental milestones is the health book that is given to each child from the hospital of birth.

We can look at a child’s development as achieving various milestones in the developmental areas (called domains) of gross motor, fine motor-adaptive, language, and personal-social skills.

Gross motor:

There is a wide range of age at which each milestone is achieved. However, as a rough rule-of-thumb, under the domain of gross motor skills, when lying on her front, the baby should be able to lift her head up to 45 degrees by 6 weeks of age. The baby should be able to have good head control and roll over by 3 to 4 months old.

Fine motor-adaptive:

Under the domain of fine motor-adaptive skills, the baby’s eyes should be able to focus on nearby objects by 6 weeks of age and follow moving objects well by 3 months old. She should be able to bring her hands together at the midline and grasp rattles by 3 to 4 months old.

Language and Personal-social:

Under the domains of language and personal-social skills, the baby should develop responsive smiling by 6 weeks of age and subsequently coo and laugh by 3 months old.
